Plant thoughtfully. Grow locally. Mistakes welcome.

The Mediocre Gardener is a community-led movement that aims at inspiring people to plant native, garden with nature, and strengthen independent garden centers — one yard at a time.

What does it mean to be a Mediocre Gardener?

It means you don’t wait until you know everything before you begin. It means you plant what works where you live, choose plants that give back to the earth, and allow your garden to evolve over time.

Mediocre is not careless. It’s accessible.

Mediocrity is imperfect, achievable, and meaningful. You don’t need a landscape architect or a master plan to participate. You need the right plants in the right place, along with a little guidance and support. That’s what we’re here for.

Why native plants matter…

Native plants do more than look beautiful.

They:

✔️ Feed pollinators

✔️ Support birds and beneficial insects

✔️ Capture and filter stormwater

✔️ Require less maintenance once established

✔️ Strengthen local nature

When you plant native, you’re not just gardening. You’re participating in a regional system that supports life beyond your fence line.

And the best part? It’s entirely doable.

Even for the self-proclaimed “mediocre” gardener.

How to Participate

  • Getting started doesn’t require a full garden redesign. It begins with learning which plants are native to your region and understanding how they function within your local area. The Mediocre Gardener provides accessible plant education — highlighting what supports pollinators, what feeds birds through the seasons, what manages stormwater, and what thrives in specific light and soil conditions. We translate ecological information into practical guidance you can use immediately.

  • When you’re ready to shop, look for Mediocre Gardener labels and resources in participating garden centers. These tools are designed to simplify decision-making in real time — helping you quickly identify plants that are native, beneficial, and well-suited to your space. Our materials remove guesswork and replace it with clarity, so you can feel confident about what goes into your cart.

  • We partner directly with independent garden centers to bring this information into the retail experience. These partnerships strengthen local businesses while making native plant education more visible and accessible. When you support participating garden centers, you’re reinforcing a regional network that values ecological stewardship and community resilience.

  • That doesn’t mean perfectly. It means considering placement, choosing plants that serve more than one purpose, and allowing your garden to become part of a larger habitat corridor — even in small ways. One native plant can support dozens of species. Several plants can transform a yard. Incremental action matters.

  • And finally, share what you’re growing. Gardening builds momentum through visibility. When neighbors see pollinators gathering, birds returning, and native plants thriving, curiosity spreads. The Mediocre Gardener community grows through shared knowledge, shared plants, and shared experience.
